La Crosse Technology V42 vs Ambient Weather WS-2000
Two 915 MHz console packages with mechanical wind and tipping rain that differ in sensor layout, local export and online service.
The decision in brief
How the options differ
Both packages include a color display, mechanical wind cups and a tipping rain mechanism on a 915 MHz US link. V42 splits temperature and humidity into a separate sensor and pairs with the La Crosse View app. WS-2000 uses one integrated array with an indoor transmitter and documents console history export to an optional SD card.

Package and specification details
Plan the sensor layout
V42's Cyclone sensor combines wind and rain, while temperature and humidity come from a separate LTV-TH5i that mounts on a shaded wall. WS-2000 places those measurements on one integrated array. Neither package has a separately positioned rain collector, so the rain gauge shares the wind sensor's site in both.
WS-2000 documents a solar panel and supercapacitor with optional backup batteries. V42's Cyclone sensor takes 3 AA batteries and its temperature/humidity sensor 2 AA, none included. Plan battery access for wherever you mount the Cyclone sensor.
V42 keeps history and records on its display and adds app graphs through La Crosse View. WS-2000 documents console history export to optional SD media, which is not included. No file export is documented for V42.
La Crosse View is free, and La Crosse also lists subscription plans whose terms were not reviewed. Ambient offers a free AWN account with an optional AWN+ subscription. Neither starting package includes a paid tier.

Indoor measurements
The documented indoor measurement hardware or explicit limits of the starting package.

Separate rain collector included
Whether the supplied rain-measurement device can be positioned separately from the wind sensor.
Compatibility with a separately purchased collector does not satisfy this field. Verify mounting and radio conditions for both devices.

Station-to-receiver radio
The reviewed regional sensor-to-console or sensor-to-gateway radio specification.
This is separate from home Wi-Fi. Match the exact US frequency or regional model; do not silently use the store default.

Ethernet connection documented
Whether a wired Ethernet connection is documented for the supplied console or gateway.
Unknown is not a verified absence. An Ethernet data port alone does not establish native Power over Ethernet.
