Budget for drives as well as the enclosure

These starting packages contain no user-storage drives. Choose capacity, redundancy and a separate backup before ordering. Two drive bays do not mean two drives are included or that all installed capacity will be usable.

Decide whether you need files back or a working computer

Synology documents Active Backup for Business on DS225+. Its Windows workflow can back up an entire device or selected volumes and restore files, volumes or the device; the backup destination must use Btrfs, and client filesystem and encryption restrictions apply. UGREEN’s detailed computer-backup guide covers selected Windows/macOS folders and requires its PC client to keep running, on firmware 1.18.0.0093 or later. Its overview also mentions image backups, but those instructions do not establish an equivalent bootable system-recovery procedure. If recovering a failed computer is essential, verify the exact operating-system and recovery-media path before buying.

Choose where the NAS backup will live

Hyper Backup documents versioned folder and package backups to USB storage, another Synology, rsync servers and supported cloud destinations. Its multi-version .hbk archives require Hyper Backup, Hyper Backup Explorer or Hyper Backup Vault to read. UGREEN Sync & Backup documents NAS backups to rsync or WebDAV servers, with task/file restoration and configurable version retention. UGREEN says those remote backup files are encrypted by default and their contents are read after restoration to a UGREEN NAS. Plan how you would recover either backup if the original NAS failed, and configure retention rather than treating a sync folder as a recoverable history. Cloud storage and a second device can add cost; neither diskless package includes them.

Plan snapshots before filling the drives

Both Snapshot Replication in DSM and the UGOS Pro Snapshot app require Btrfs for shared-folder snapshots. Set a schedule and retention policy, and reserve space for changed data. UGREEN distinguishes restoring a folder, which overwrites its current state, from cloning a shared folder for inspection. Its locked snapshots avoid automatic retention cleanup but can still be manually deleted; that is not proof of immutable protection. A snapshot on the same storage does not provide an independent copy if the NAS or its drives are lost.

Included memory differs substantially

Synology lists 2 GB DDR4 non-ECC with a supported 6 GB maximum; UGREEN lists 8 GB DDR5 with a 16 GB maximum. Budget around the app, not just the enclosure: DS225+ needs at least 4 GB for Synology Photos object recognition, so the starting 2 GB package does not meet that feature’s requirement. More RAM alone does not establish faster backups, recognition quality or a safe number of simultaneous services.

Check the applications you will actually use

DS225+ lists Synology Drive, Photos and Office for file access, photo management and document work. UGREEN separates NAS-side App Center packages from its computer/mobile client and explicitly supports Docker on DXP2800. Docker support does not mean every third-party app is configured or maintained by UGREEN: plan its persistent data, permissions, updates and backup. UGREEN has no dedicated Linux desktop client; browser, SMB and NFS access remain available. Confirm your specific client and application workflow on either NAS rather than choosing by a list of app names.

Check the complete network path

DS225+ has one 2.5GbE and one 1GbE port; DXP2800 has one 2.5GbE port. A port rating is not measured file-transfer speed. Client, switch, storage configuration and protocol all affect throughput.

If the network also needs to survive a power cut, plan UPS power and controlled NAS shutdown.

Check remote access for the specific service

DSM QuickConnect and UGREENlink simplify remote access without requiring a routine manual port-forwarding setup. They are not interchangeable routes for every service. QuickConnect excludes third-party applications and has relay and service limitations. UGREENlink requires a UGREEN Cloud account, and UGREEN documents a separate list of remotely accessible container apps with client/version restrictions. Confirm the exact app and access method, restrict permissions and test from outside your LAN; neither a remote ID nor a 2.5GbE socket guarantees internet transfer speed.

Match the exact drive model and software version

UGREEN’s current DXP2800 FAQ says its two M.2 slots can provide SSD cache or a separate SSD storage pool. Check the exact SSD and intended use against its compatibility list. Synology drive policy depends on the NAS model and DSM version; physical fit or a brand name does not establish tested compatibility. The software guidance here uses DSM 7.3 specifications and the stated UGOS Pro version requirements, checked on 19 September 2026. Match those requirements to the installed firmware and app versions before relying on a feature.

Make updates and restore checks part of ownership

DSM documents update controls, storage-health monitoring and notifications; UGOS Pro documents firmware-update policies and restarts. UGREEN’s configuration export saves settings, not a separate copy of user files. Keep a file backup as well as the relevant configuration/package backup, schedule interruptions and read the applicable release notes. Before trusting either setup, restore a sample deleted file, confirm an older version is available and check how you would read the backup if the original NAS were unavailable.
