How the options differ

All three are two-bay diskless enclosures with no user data drives included. DS223j ships with 1 GB and one 1GbE port, with memory upgradeability and M.2 slots not established. The AS3302T v2 ships with a fixed 2 GB that ASUSTOR describes as non-upgradable and one 2.5GbE port. The TS-264-8G SODIMM revision ships with 8 GB on two SODIMM slots, two 2.5GbE ports and two M.2 slots, but that revision has to be confirmed with the seller. Nominal port speeds are not measured transfer results.

Check memory and whether it can grow

DS223j has 1 GB of factory DDR4 and the cited Synology documents do not state whether it can be upgraded or what the maximum is. The AS3302T v2 has 2 GB that the manufacturer explicitly describes as not expandable. The TS-264-8G revision documented since January 2024 has 8 GB DDR4 on two SODIMM slots with a 16 GB maximum, but a seller's broad TS-264-8G label does not by itself confirm which revision ships. Decide which applications you need and whether their memory requirements fit the fixed figures.

Compare the supplied network ports

DS223j supplies one 1GbE port. The AS3302T v2 supplies one 2.5GbE port. The TS-264-8G supplies two 2.5GbE ports; 10GbE needs a supported optional PCIe card and is not a supplied port. A faster port only helps when the computer, switch and cabling support the same rate, and two ports do not automatically combine for one transfer. We have not measured file-copy speeds.

Settle the M.2, drive-holder and package questions before buying drives

The TS-264-8G documents two M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 3 slots with SSDs separate. The cited DS223j and AS3302T v2 hardware lists do not establish an M.2 slot count. Using 2.5-inch drives in DS223j requires the optional Type C holder. All three packages include the enclosure, power supply and at least one LAN cable; storage drives are separate, and the AS3302T v2 package must be kept to the v2 / Gen2 identity rather than the earlier AS3302T.

Common questions

Does the QNAP configurator's Diskless option mean the price includes nothing but the box?

The reviewed US configurator with TS-264-8G-US and Diskless selected shows no added data drives, and its -BDL parent SKU does not itself establish included drives. Confirm the memory revision and the exact shipped contents with the seller before relying on socketed memory.

Can I run any 2.5-inch SSD in the DS223j bays?

The bays are 3.5-inch SATA bays, and Synology lists the optional Type C holder as needed for 2.5-inch drives. Check the current model-specific compatibility list and the DSM version requirements for features such as Btrfs and Snapshot Replication.

Questions to check before buying

RAM upgradeability, maximum RAM and M.2 slot count remain unverified. Confirm upgrade support with Synology before buying memory or M.2 drives.

The optional Type C holder is needed for 2.5-inch drives. Btrfs and Snapshot Replication require DSM 7.2-64570 or later; check the current model-specific application list.

The AS3302T v2 is the Drivestor 2 Pro Gen2; the earlier AS3302T is a different generation.

M.2 slot count remains unverified. Check the supported drive list and required applications before choosing storage.

The US store name alone does not confirm which memory revision will ship.

10GbE needs a supported optional PCIe card; it is not a supplied port.
