Check the Cameo generation and your computer
This comparison uses Cameo 5 Alpha, SILH-CAMEO-5A. The earlier Cameo 5 and Alpha Plus are different models. Silhouette describes Alpha's Print & Cut registration as a change from three points to four; that specification is not a measured accuracy result. The Alpha product page requires Silhouette Studio 5.0.402 or later and lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 13 or later. Check your computer before buying, especially if you already use an older Cameo and Studio installation.

Start with a file you already use
If you regularly import SVG artwork, test that workflow before choosing. Cricut documents free own-image uploads in Design Space, with a 5000-path limit for SVG files. Silhouette Studio requires paid Designer Edition or above to open SVG; Business Edition adds SVG export. The included Design Store trial is not that software upgrade.

Price the tools for the operation
Explore 5 supplies a scoring tool for folds alongside its fine-point tool. Cameo 5 Alpha supplies AutoBlade Type B and a sketch-pen adapter; additional embossing and foil tools are separate. For folded cards, check the included scoring route. For other specialty operations, list the exact extra tool and mat before comparing complete purchase costs.

Confirm the design size in its actual mode
Cameo 5 Alpha documents a 305 by 610 mm basic mat area, requiring a larger mat than the starting package lists. Explore 5 support names compatible mat formats but does not resolve its usable basic mat area in our reviewed evidence. Both support printed projects; registration marks use space, so a basic cut area does not establish sticker-sheet fit.

Choose the workflow, then the exact offer
The starting options are Explore 5 Machine Only, item 2012400, and CAMEO5 Alpha standard machine, SILH-CAMEO-5A. Neither comparison column represents every machine from that brand. If your project requires a different blade system, scanner or larger machine, select that model separately. We have not tested cutting accuracy, speed, noise or reliability.
