Start with one project: its material, finished size and original file. Then check the blade, mat, software feature and exact purchase package needed to make it. A longer list of compatible materials does not answer those questions.
Choose the operation before the machine
Write down whether you need to cut through material, score a fold or engrave a surface. Those are separate operations. Cricut’s Maker 5 tool guide pairs unbonded fabric with a Rotary Blade and Fabric Grip mat; engraving blanks use different tools. Match the exact material and accessory instructions, then make a test cut. A material’s thickness alone does not establish suitability.
Existing accessories also need a generation check. For the Maker 5, Cricut says earlier Maker pens do not fit its Pen Holder. Do not price a replacement machine on the assumption that every tool and pen you own transfers to it. The Explore 5, Maker 4 and Maker 5 comparison separates the supplied equipment from optional specialty tools.
Try the file workflow first
If you use purchased or self-made SVG artwork, import a representative file before buying. Cricut’s software FAQ documents free own-image uploads in Design Space. Its upload instructions require internet access and limit SVGs to 5000 paths. Premium cleanup tools are separate from ordinary importing.
Silhouette Studio’s edition table places SVG import in paid Designer Edition or above and SVG export in Business Edition. Treat a software-edition license and a Design Store trial as separate items. Inspect the imported paths, fonts, layers and size rather than relying on the file extension alone. Our Explore 5 vs Cameo 5 Alpha comparison applies these software requirements to two exact starting packages.
Keep basic cutting and printed projects separate
The named size of a mat includes areas that may not be cuttable. Basic blade-cut width and length also differ from Print Then Cut area. Cricut reserves space for registration marks, producing an area that is not a full rectangle. Check the complete design in the selected machine and paper-size preview.
Allow for unresolved evidence near a size limit. The Joy Xtra product reference preserves the slightly different basic mat-cut sizes in its store and quick-start guide. Those values remain conflicting in the catalogue; check the actual design preview before planning a tight fit.
Decide whether you need a scanner
A scanner can create a cutting outline from existing artwork. The Brother ScanNCut DX SDX125 package is the scanner-equipped model in this catalogue. Brother’s Direct Cut instructions describe scanning clear printed or hand-drawn outlines and checking the machine’s own maximum scanning area. A long cutting mat does not prove equally long scanning support.
That workflow is separate from registration-mark alignment. The reviewed Brother US support page says CADXPRNTCUT1 Print to Cut activation is unavailable in the United States. Do not assume the scanner supplies that optional feature.
Complete the package and workspace
Check the blade, mat, pen or scoring tool, software upgrade and any separate printer. For long material, verify the feeding route: Brother’s optional roll feeder requires CanvasWorkspace and accessory activation. A statement that the machine supports matless cutting does not put a feeder in the box.
Body dimensions do not include material travel. Maker 5 setup requires at least 10 inches behind the machine and unobstructed material movement. Plan around the actual mat or roll. Its US offer checked on 14 September 2026 described purchase availability as mid-September; confirm current seller terms if timing matters.

Common questions
Is the size of a cutting mat the usable design size?
Not always. Check the documented basic cutting area, and separately preview printed projects with their registration marks. Scanner area is another distinct limit.
Does matless cutting mean every material can be fed directly?
No. The backing, material width and feeding accessory requirements depend on the machine. Brother’s SDX125 roll-feeder route needs a separate accessory, CanvasWorkspace and activation.
Does software being free mean all file types and features are included?
No. For example, SVG import in Silhouette Studio needs Designer Edition or above. Check the specific feature and distinguish edition licenses from content subscriptions.
