Choose a window air conditioner: window fit, power, capacity and CEER

Measure the window opening, check the outlet and circuit, then compare listed capacity, CEER and compressor type for the exact US model number and its box contents.

A window air conditioner has to pass three checks before its cooling number matters: the opening it must sit in, the outlet and circuit it must draw from, and the rating basis behind its capacity and efficiency figures. Settle them in that order, then confirm the exact model number, because one family name can cover several suffixes, colors and ENERGY STAR records.

Measure the window opening first

Manufacturers publish an opening width range and a minimum vertical opening for a standard single- or double-hung window. The packages in this catalogue document 23 in to 36 in of width with a 14 in minimum height for the Midea MAW08V1WBK and GE Profile PWJV08WWF, 22 in to 36 in with a 13 in minimum for the LG LW8022IVSM, and 21-1/2 in to 36 in for the Friedrich Chill Premier Inverter CCV08A10A and CCV12A10A, where Friedrich notes that the minimum is reached with the side curtains removed. The Friedrich sources read here state no minimum opening height. Midea's manual raises the minimum height to 15-1/2 in for its 12,000 to 14,500 Btu/h models, so a larger unit in the same family can need a taller opening.

Measure between the side jambs and from the sill to the bottom of the raised sash, and look for a storm window frame: LG's manual describes adding a wood strip on the inner sill when a storm frame would stop the unit tilting outward to drain. These ranges are installation limits, not a promise that a unit fits your frame or that your sill can carry it, so follow the manufacturer's bracket and installation steps. Friedrich describes its SimpleSill design as letting the window be opened and closed after installation; that is the manufacturer's description, not a security or weather-sealing test.

Check the outlet and circuit

Every package here is a 115 V unit, but the documented draw differs. GE lists 6.4 rated cooling amps for PWJV08WWF, Friedrich 8.3 A for CCV08A10A and 10.5 A for CCV12A10A, and LG 8.9 A for LW8022IVSM, while the Midea sources read give no amps for MAW08V1WBK. LG's manual asks for a standard 120 V, 3-wire grounding receptacle rated 15 A on a 15 A time-delay fuse or circuit breaker, Friedrich specifies a NEMA 5-15P plug on a 125 V 15 A circuit, and GE lists a NEMA 5-15 plug with an LCDI/AFCI cord. The LG and Midea manuals describe a test-and-reset current device on the plug and warn against extension cords and adapter plugs.

Larger units in the same families can change plug type: Friedrich lists NEMA 6-15P and 6-20P plugs on 250 V circuits for its 18,000 and 24,000 Btu Chill Premier Inverter models, a different plug face from the 5-15P of the 115 V models. This guide gives no wiring advice. Follow the manual for your model and ask a qualified electrician when the circuit, receptacle or breaker is in doubt.

Compare capacity and CEER on one basis

The ENERGY STAR listing for the exact model number is the most consistent place to compare cooling capacity and CEER. Manufacturers label their own figures differently: Midea writes 8,000 BTU DOE, GE writes Cooling BTUH (MAX), LG refers to a certified cooling capacity, and Friedrich lists Cooling Btu without naming a basis. For the five packages here, each manufacturer figure matches its listing. Page labels can still disagree: on the check date Midea's MAW12V1YWT-S store page carried an 8,000 BTU page title above a 12,000 BTU DOE product heading. Keep a figure from an unnamed basis, a seller headline or a portable air conditioner apart from a listed window-unit rating.

A higher CEER means more rated cooling for the energy used under the test conditions, not a forecast of your bill. ENERGY STAR Version 5.0 sets minimum CEER levels by capacity band and by whether the unit has louvered sides, and the listing separately marks Most Efficient models: MAW08V1WBK and the PWJV08W**# family carry Most Efficient at CEER 16.0, while LW8022IVSM at 15.5 and the Friedrich CCV units at 15.0 are certified without it. The listing's Connected Capable flag refers to a specific ENERGY STAR communications criterion; every record in the dataset on the check date showed No, including units with built-in Wi-Fi, so it is not a Wi-Fi indicator.

Inverter or fixed-speed

LG and Friedrich both describe the difference: a non-inverter compressor turns fully on or off to regulate temperature, while an inverter or variable-speed compressor adjusts its speed to the load. All five packages here are documented as inverter units, and on the check date every one of the 577 records in the ENERGY STAR certified room air conditioner dataset listed a variable-speed compressor, so the listing will not help you find a fixed-speed model. If you compare against one, read the manufacturer's compressor description rather than inferring it. Savings claims such as Friedrich's up to 35 percent figure are manufacturer comparisons under the conditions in their footnotes.

Treat room size, noise and moisture figures as claims

Room-size figures are manufacturer claims. GE gives 250 to 350 sq ft for PWJV08WWF, Midea 350 sq ft for MAW08V1WBK, and LG an estimated 350 sq ft beside a Medium Rooms 301 to 500 sq ft label for LW8022IVSM; Friedrich publishes none for the CCV units in the sources read. Sound figures are quoted in different modes, such as GE's 43 dBA in Quiet Mode on low cool, LG's 44 dBA in sleep and Friedrich's 42 dB in cooling, without stated distances, so they are not ranked here. Moisture removal in pints per hour, from 2.1 to 3.7 across these packages, is a rating while cooling and is not comparable with a dehumidifier's pints-per-day figure.

Confirm the exact model number and check recalls

Window units change suffixes by color, seller and year. Midea's black MAW08V1WBK, white MAW08V1WWT and their -T versions are separate ENERGY STAR records, and GE's listing covers PWJV08W**# with wildcard characters, so match the label or seller code to the record you rely on. Model numbers also decide safety notices: in recall 25-320 of June 5, 2025, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Midea's recall of U and U+ window air conditioners for a mold exposure risk, covering units sold from March 2020 through May 2025 under several brands, including Midea MAW08U1QWT and MAW08V1QWT and Frigidaire GHWQ085WD1. Check the model label, which the notice places on the front right side of the unit, against the CPSC notice before installing any unit, new or used.

Know what is in the box and what follows

Installation kits differ. LG lists curtain panels, L brackets and a support bracket; Midea lists frame assemblies, a top rail, safety locks and sash foam; Friedrich lists foam seals, a security bracket, screws and lock brackets marked optional. GE's page for PWJV08WWF publishes no box list, and the manual it links names other models. Warranties differ too: LG states 1 year parts and labor, Midea a one year limited warranty and GE 1-year parts replacement with return to vendor and no labor warranty listed, while Friedrich's page claims a 5-year limited warranty that its linked certificate does not state. After purchase, plan for regular filter cleaning, which LG and Friedrich prompt with filter reminders, keep the original packaging for off-season storage as Midea suggests, and record the model and serial numbers for warranty and recall checks.

Common questions

Is a higher BTU number always the better choice?

Not necessarily. Room-size figures are manufacturer claims, and larger units in a family can need a taller window opening, more current or a different plug. Compare the listed capacity with the manufacturer's room guidance, your window measurements and your circuit.

Does the ENERGY STAR connected flag show whether a unit has Wi-Fi?

No. Connected is a specific ENERGY STAR communications criterion. On the check date every certified room air conditioner record showed Connected Capable No, including models whose manufacturers document built-in Wi-Fi app control.

Can I run a window air conditioner from an extension cord?

The LG and Midea manuals say not to use an extension cord or adapter plug with their units. Follow the manual for your model and ask a qualified electrician if the receptacle or circuit does not match the stated requirement.

Does a published window range guarantee that the unit fits?

No. A width range and minimum opening height are the manufacturer's installation limits for a standard window. Sill depth, storm frames, screens and the condition of the window still need checking against the installation manual.
