Choose a USB microphone: connections, monitoring and mounting

Trace the recording path, check mute and monitoring, and identify the equipment your exact package needs.

A USB microphone purchase is a small recording system. Write down the host, application, sources, headphone route and mounting location before comparing specifications. Then check that each part of the selected package supports that plan.

Trace inputs and outputs

Follow the audio from the speaker to the saved recording. USB microphones contain a conversion path to a compatible host. An analogue XLR output instead feeds a microphone input on a mixer or interface. An XLR input receives a separate microphone. These functions are not interchangeable, even when product names are similar.

MV7+ provides a passive XLR output; MV7i uses its combo socket as an input. For an additional source, decide whether you need a combined track or separate editing tracks. The microphone specification and the recording application must both support the intended route. Do not infer simultaneous operation from the presence of two sockets.

Separate monitoring from recording

Plug headphones into the documented monitoring output and identify each control. Headphone level changes what you hear; recording gain changes the captured level. A monitor blend changes the balance between your voice and playback. None of these alone proves that the application selected the right microphone or saved a recording.

Test mute while watching and replaying a short recording in the application you will use. PodMic USB illustrates why this matters: its dial press can disable only headphone monitoring outside Connect or UNIFY. Silence in your headphones must not be treated as proof that transmission stopped.

Check processing and digital formats

Decide which effects should be recorded and which should only help monitoring. Keep microphone DSP, application effects and analogue output behavior separate. Save and replay a short file after changing modes. A local monitoring claim does not measure the delay through a conferencing service or wireless headphones.

Choose a format supported by the entire recording path and keep device and application rates aligned. Bit depth and sample rate describe formats; they are not listening tests. Likewise, a cardioid or hypercardioid label does not rank voice quality or establish how much keyboard noise will remain in your room.

Complete the physical setup

Read the box list for the exact package. A yoke or mounting clamp needs a compatible base or arm, and its thread must match. Check the cable at both ends and leave room for connectors and movement. Product photographs can show accessories sold separately. Wave:3 MK.2 includes a desk stand in the selected standard package; the other selected packages require one to be chosen separately.

Verify the host and the exact generation

A USB-C plug does not establish mobile-app support. Check the manufacturer requirements for the OS, device and app you intend to use. Keep unknown combinations unknown until verified. Reused product URLs can also change generation: the current Elgato page identifies Wave:3 MK.2, so older Wave:3 specifications must not fill its missing details.

Common questions

Does an XLR socket always provide microphone output?

No. Check the documented direction: MV7i accepts an external source through its combo input.

Is a mounting yoke a desk stand?

No. It attaches the microphone to a compatible support; verify that a base or arm is included or select one separately.
