Choose a resin 3D printer: build volume, pixel size and the full workflow

Size the build volume to your parts, read the published pixel dimensions instead of the K label, and budget for washing, curing and filtration before comparing packages.

A consumer resin printer is one station in a workflow: slice a model, expose it layer by layer through a masking LCD, then wash, cure and finish the part. Decide the part size and the routine you can support before letting a 9K, 10K, 14K or 16K label narrow the choice.

Start with the parts you will print

Current consumer printers cluster into a 7-inch class and a 10-inch class. The two ELEGOO and Anycubic 7-inch models in this catalogue publish roughly 153 by 78 to 87 by 165 mm build volumes, while the 10-inch class publishes about 212 to 223 mm wide, 118 to 126 mm deep and 220 to 235 mm tall. The larger class also needs more resin in the vat, a heavier machine and more bench space.

Treat a published build volume as a maximum, not a usable size. Supports, orientation, plate edges and the slicer's margins reduce it. Build height matters for tall single pieces, but every layer is exposed separately, so tall parts also take longer. Printer body dimensions are a different figure and do not describe the working clearance you need to lift the cover and remove the plate.

Read pixel resolution instead of the K label

The K labels are marketing names for a pixel count. Two 16K panels in this catalogue publish 15120 by 6230 pixels at 14 by 19 micrometres, a 14K panel publishes 13320 by 5120 pixels at 16.8 by 24.8 micrometres, a 10K panel publishes 9024 by 5120 pixels at 17 by 17 micrometres, and a 9K panel publishes 8520 by 4320 pixels at 18 micrometres. Some of these pixels are not square, so compare both dimensions.

Pixel size describes the masking panel, not the finished surface. Exposure, resin, anti-aliasing settings, support marks and post-processing all change what you see on a part. The catalogue records the larger published pixel axis as a number so the filter stays conservative, and it records no measured print-quality result.

Light source, layer heights and speed claims

The current models document COB light engines at 405 nm, usually with a Fresnel lens. Some manufacturers publish an intensity figure or a lamp wattage; others publish only the machine's power requirement. These are specifications, not measured exposure at the panel, and the exposure time still depends on the resin profile you load in the slicer.

Supported layer heights differ more than the headline numbers suggest. Some printers publish a 0.01 to 0.2 mm range, one publishes 0.02 to 0.15 mm, and one publishes 0.05 to 0.2 mm. A lower minimum does not mean every resin prints well at that setting. Speed claims depend on a named mode, a specific resin and a layer height: the same printer can publish 45 mm per hour in its manual and up to 150 mm per hour in a high-speed mode, and another manufacturer states layers per hour instead. Keep the conditions with the number and do not compare bare figures across brands.

Leveling, filtration and monitoring

Leveling routines are a real difference in daily use. Automatic leveling, assisted leveling that is calibrated at the factory, and manual four-screw leveling with a calibration card are documented on different current models. A factory-leveled plate can still need adjustment after shipping, so read the manual's procedure before you buy.

Filtration also varies. One model documents a built-in purification module with an activated carbon part and auto or manual control, others are compatible with a separately sold purifier, and one listing documents no filtration while its seller recommends a separate purifier. A carbon filter is not a ventilation system and not a safety certification. Follow the manufacturer's resin handling and ventilation instructions for the exact model and resin you use. Cameras, cloud apps and Wi-Fi cluster printing are separate functions; confirm that the feature you want is listed for the exact model, because one current model lists its brand app as not supported.

Plan the washing and curing workflow

Every standalone package in this catalogue excludes the wash and cure station. The manufacturer stores sell these units as separate bundle selections, and one seller's FAQ lists resin, a wash and cure kit, an LCD screen protector and an air purifier as items to buy separately. Add the cleaning solvent, gloves, a funnel and filters, and plan for consumables: release film is replaced periodically and the masking LCD is treated as a consumable by its manufacturer.

Compare the documented box list of the exact offer. Current packages list the build plate, resin vat, USB drive, scrapers, tools, a funnel and sometimes a mask, gloves, a spare release film or a separate camera module. One listing publishes no itemized box list at all; record that as unknown rather than assuming parity with other brands.

Confirm the exact US offer before ordering

Keep the store, the option name and the SKU together. Manufacturer stores show bundle selectors for wash and cure units, resin and enclosures on the same page as the standalone printer, so the selected option decides what arrives. One store presented only Other and EU Plug region options when checked, so confirm that the supplied cord fits a US outlet. Shipping scope also differs: some stores ship only to the mainland or the 48 contiguous states, and one listing was backordered with a stated lead time.

Use the comparison as a checklist of sourced specifications. It records no price, stock, ranking or tested winner, and it makes no claims about resin safety beyond following the manufacturer's handling instructions.

Common questions

Is a 16K printer always better than a 10K printer?

No. The labels name pixel counts on panels of different sizes. Compare the published pixel dimensions, the build volume you need and the resin and exposure you will use. No measured print result is recorded here.

Do I need a wash and cure station?

Printed resin parts are washed and post-cured as part of the manufacturer's workflow. The standalone packages here do not include a station; manufacturers sell them as separate bundle selections, and manual washing and curing methods are described in their instructions.

Does a built-in air purifier make the printer safe to run indoors?

A carbon filter addresses odor as described by the manufacturer. It is not a ventilation system or a safety certification. Follow the manufacturer's handling, ventilation and protective equipment instructions for the exact resin you use.
