Choose a portable SSD: host, capacity and cables

Understand exact capacity variants, USB connection limits, supplied accessories and password-software conditions before choosing a portable SSD.

Start with the host, not the drive headline

A portable SSD connects through a chain: the drive, cable, any hub or dock, and the host port. T9 and XS2000 document USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, while T7 Shield and XS1000 use Gen 2. A USB-C connector describes the socket, not a guarantee of the required protocol. Check the exact host documentation before paying for a capability that your connection cannot use. A nominal link rate is not the same unit or measurement as file throughput.

Compare the capacity you will actually order

The starter comparisons select 2TB packages. Capacity is stored on each purchase option rather than inherited as a universal model specification. Check the part number and color at the seller, and review a different capacity separately. Advertised decimal capacity and formatted usable space are different. A larger number on another package does not establish identical speed, accessories or software support.

Read the conditions behind an up-to figure

Sequential maxima are useful specifications, not guarantees for every transfer. File sizes, the host path and the workload can change results. The T9 2TB page also contains an internal disagreement: its headline advertises 2000 MB/s write, while the indexed specification table says 1950. We retain a conflicting value instead of choosing the larger figure. CompareFoundry has not benchmarked these drives or established a sustained-write winner.

Check both ends of the included cable

XS2000 includes a USB-C to USB-C cable and sleeve. XS1000 has a USB-C to USB-A cable, with Kingston dating addition of a Type-A to Type-C adapter for black units to August 2024. SanDisk lists a USB-C cable and Type-A adapter for the selected Extreme package. Check an older box before assuming the latest accessory list applies. An adapter changes the connector arrangement; it does not prove a higher protocol rate.

Distinguish file access from password support

SanDisk lists hardware encryption, but its password/encryption footnote excludes USB-C smartphones, including Android. A general phone-compatibility statement or mobile app does not remove that restriction. Check the operating system and current password software for the exact task. Unknown encryption evidence is not a confirmed no, and host-managed encryption is a separate workflow. We have not tested software installation or encrypted access on a device.

Keep protection claims separate from backup planning

An IP rating has specific test conditions and is not a promise that every exposure is harmless. XS2000 evidence includes sleeve conditions; T7 Shield and the current Extreme page state IP65. A drop claim does not supply a missing ingress rating, and older revisions may differ. Retain another independent copy of important data. Neither a protective shell nor a warranty is a substitute for a backup.

Common questions

Does USB-C mean 20 Gb/s?

No. Confirm the drive protocol, host port and cable. Connector shape alone is insufficient.

Are other capacities automatically covered?

No. The initial purchase options are 2TB. Other capacities need reviewed packages and any changed fact overrides.

Has CompareFoundry tested these drives?

No. These are source-based comparisons, not independent speed, durability or encryption tests.
