Start with the NAS you intend to use, the data you need to keep and a separate backup destination. Then select exact hard-drive part numbers. A product-family name is not enough to establish recording method, cache, rotational speed or warranty.
Choose the storage layout before adding capacity
A mirror of two equal 4 TB drives provides one drive of nominal capacity before formatting and system overhead. More bays can support other layouts, but usable storage depends on the NAS rules, redundancy level and drive sizes. Leave room for snapshots and growth, and check the supported replacement or expansion sequence before buying a mixed set.
Keep the part number attached to the specification
The selected WD40EFPX and WD80EFPX are both Red Plus CMR drives, yet their capacity and spindle-speed entries differ. Red Pro is a separate range. Likewise, the selected Seagate ST8000VN004 is standard IronWolf, not IronWolf Pro, and the nearby ST8000VN002 column in a family datasheet is not interchangeable. Match the label and full suffix on delivery.
Do not turn ratings into lifespan promises
Annual workload is a usage rating with manufacturer conditions. It is not a lifetime write allowance and cannot predict when your drive will fail. Maximum transfer figures are also conditional specifications, not measurements of your NAS, network or application. Neither cache size nor rotational speed establishes a quieter or more reliable drive.
Verify the NAS pairing and the seller
Check the exact enclosure, drive part number, firmware and operating-system version against the NAS vendor documentation. This category does not claim that a reviewed drive was tested in a particular enclosure. An unlisted drive and an explicitly incompatible drive are not the same thing. Read the vendor policy instead of interpreting an empty compatibility cell as a rejection.
For warranty, distinguish a new retail drive from OEM, used and recertified offers. Retain the invoice and verify serial-number eligibility. A seller listing does not prove that every regional recovery-service programme applies. Confirm package contents separately; product photographs do not establish supplied cables or mounting hardware.
Keep a recoverable copy outside the array
Redundancy is not an independent backup. Before moving the only copy of important files, run the NAS health checks, configure alerts and test a restoration from a separate backup. Plan power-loss handling for the populated enclosure as well as its drives. CompareFoundry has not performed physical drive, acoustic, endurance or NAS interoperability testing.
Continue with the enclosure and firmware checklist in the NAS companion guide.
Common questions
Does an unknown compatibility cell mean the drive will not work?
No. It means this review has not established that exact pairing. Check the NAS vendor list and policy for the actual model and firmware.
Is annual workload the same as lifetime TBW?
No. Keep the manufacturer annual workload definition separate from lifetime-write metrics and warranty eligibility.
