A scan is useful when it reaches the right place in the right form. Start with the originals you handle and the application or folder that must receive them. Then choose the feeder, connection and software path together.
Follow a document from paper to saved file
Write down where the document is loaded, who starts the scan, where naming and OCR happen, and where the final file is kept. Saving to a connected computer, a USB memory stick and a cloud account are different workflows. A touchscreen alone does not establish that all of them work without software on another device.
ScanSnap iX2400 is USB-only and follows a computer-based route. The iX2500 adds configured wireless destinations and a touchscreen. Initial profiles, accounts and destination-specific requirements still matter. No installed cloud, NAS or third-party integration is claimed here.
Check the acquisition interface your application expects
Both ScanSnap models use a scanner-specific driver rather than TWAIN. The selected Epson ES-580W and Brother ADS-3350W document TWAIN support. That is an important starting distinction when an existing application needs to control a scanner directly.
It is not a universal compatibility certificate. Confirm the application's requirements, the exact OS and driver version, and whether a separate import-from-folder workflow would suit the task. Windows, macOS and Linux software lists can differ; a protocol named on a product page need not be supported identically on every platform.
Read the feeder capacity with its paper conditions
An ADF count is a nominal limit for particular paper, not a promise that every mixed stack will feed unattended. The ScanSnap specifications qualify their 100-sheet claim with A4 paper at 80 g/m². Brother qualifies its capacities with 20 lb paper. Receipts, folds, cards and fragile originals may need different loading or accessories.
Keep manual feeding, long-document mode and optional carrier sheets separate. The current iX2500 specification includes manual mode; the iX2400 table does not. Do not transfer one model's handling feature to the other merely because their ordinary feeder capacities match.
Do not mix sheets, sides and software throughput
Pages per minute and images per minute describe different counts. Duplex output can contain two images for one sheet. Read the document size, colour mode and dpi setting beside each manufacturer speed. OCR, compression and network transfer add work beyond image capture.
The ADS-3350W source has inconsistent duplex-rate wording. This catalogue retains that qualification rather than guessing an images-per-minute value. The separate ADS-4700W has its own specifications; its rate is not borrowed by the similarly named model.
Separate optical detail from searchable text
Optical resolution describes the scanner hardware. Interpolated output is another setting, and searchable text depends on OCR software and the source document. More dpi does not automatically improve a difficult receipt or guarantee accurate totals. Check important extracted text against the original before relying on it.
Check what is included and what still needs setup
USB cable type, a memory stick, carrier sheets and software entitlements are independent package questions. A Type-C port does not guarantee an included Type-C-to-C cable. Regional software bundles and licence certificates can also differ from the base application's capabilities.
For a network destination, verify the required account, permissions and server configuration. Treat internet-based OCR or storage as a separate data-handling choice from local capture. This guide does not make a compliance or security certification.
Use the document-scanner comparison to review exact US packages, sources and remaining unknowns. Select the workflow that fits, then perform a small real-document acceptance test before depending on it for routine work.
Common questions
Does duplex scanning mean twice as many sheets per minute?
No. Images-per-minute figures count sides; sheets and captured images are not interchangeable.
Is a touchscreen proof of computer-free OCR and cloud access?
No. Capture, initial setup, OCR and the final destination can have different software and account requirements.
Epson scanning destinations · Brother destination conditions
Do the two ScanSnap models provide a TWAIN driver?
No. The reviewed technical pages specify ScanSnap-specific drivers rather than TWAIN.
