Compare two US packages that each ship one remote sensor, by documented stage limits, accessory terminals, power approach and platform claims.
The decision in brief
How the options differ
Both packages include one remote sensor and document multistage and accessory support. Start with the stages and accessories your system actually has, then compare how each is powered without a C wire and which platforms the manufacturer names. Neither record is an installation guarantee or a savings measurement.

The buying guide
Package and specification details
Match the published stage and accessory lists
ecobee documents 2H/2C conventional, 2H/2C heat pump plus 2 stages of AUX heat, and one 1-wire or one 2-wire accessory. Google documents up to 3 heating and 3 cooling stages, heat pumps up to 3 stages with 1 or 2 auxiliary stages, HUM, DEHUM and VENT, with connector limits on which extra wire fits. Treat both as manufacturer statements to check against your wiring.
The ecobee package lists a Power Extender Kit in the box for homes without a C wire. The Nest package relies on Power Sharing and a built-in rechargeable battery, and Google says a C wire or separately sold Nest Power Connector may be needed in limited cases. The Power Connector is not in the Nest box list.
ecobee names Apple HomeKit, Alexa, Google Assistant and SmartThings and does not mention Matter or Thread. Google states Matter certification and control through Google Home or other Matter-enabled apps, without naming Apple Home or HomeKit. Pick the integration you will actually use and confirm it on the current manufacturer page.
Does a bundled sensor mean either thermostat senses occupancy in every room?
No. Each package includes one sensor. ecobee's SmartSensor and Google's Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) are different products with different capabilities, and extra sensors are separate purchases.
These manufacturer specifications do not establish measured performance, noise, long-term reliability or running cost. We have not independently tested these products. Check current prices, stock and operating-space instructions with the seller and manufacturer.

Zero included does not establish that sensors are unsupported; some thermostats do not support any remote sensor at all.
Documented Wi-Fi bands and other radios in the thermostat.
A 2.4 GHz-only radio needs that band enabled on your router. A listed radio does not by itself establish Thread or Matter support.
